OSHA Releases 2015 Self-Reporting Severe Injury Stats

Employers reported 10,388 severe injuries to OSHA under the new requirement in 2015. OSHA contacted 62% of the companies reporting severe incidents. They report that 62% of those contacted were required to self-investigate and share their planned remedies. The other 38% received on-site investigations by OSHA.

Note how manufacturing stands out in these graphs. The data makes me wonder whether construction activity is still way down, or whether that industry is more reluctant to report incidents.

OSHA estimates the number of incidents reported was around half of the actual incidents that occurred. They established that any discovered first-time offender companies  (not reporting a severe incident) will be cited from $1,000 to $7,000. A repeat offence can bring a citation of up to $70,000.
